The History of Antibiotics Most of us would be aware of the life-saving effect antibiotics have had on literally millions of people since they were first manufactured on a wide scale in the 1940’s. What many of us may not be aware of is that the word “antibiotic” can be applied to all kinds of different substances. In fact, Penicillin and many other conventional antibiotics are actually often derived from … [Read more...] about Could Homeopathy help avert the coming Antibiotic Resistance crisis?

newborn

Strep B is short for Group B streptococcus (GBS) which is a type of bacteria that lives in the bowel/vagina as part of the normal flora during or outside of pregnancy.  Between one in three, and one in ten pregnant women carry GBS though it can come and go in the vagina and bowel of most women. For some exposed babies, GBS can grow on the skin. Much less commonly GBS can enter the newborn’s body and cause serious infection. Early onset GBS occurs in the first week of life or late onset GBS from week one to 3 months. In more recent years it has become … [Read more...] about What is Strep B? What is GBS?

Garlic Great for Food Poisoning

14/05/2012 By Jacqui Harrison

garlic to treat the flu

[byline_author] In a recent study, garlic has been found to be far more effective than the antibiotics most commonly used to treat food poisoning by Champhylobacter. One of the active chemicals in garlic, diallyl sulphide, was shown to be a much stronger and faster acting antimicrobial than erythromycin and ciprofloxacin. Champhylobacter is the most common food poisoning bacteria, especially from raw or undercooked poultry or from cross-contaminated via dirty surfaces and utensils. Previous studies have shown diallyl sulphide was also effective against other … [Read more...] about Garlic Great for Food Poisoning
