Book Review by Linlee Jordan March 2026
The Practical Handbook of Veterinary Homoeopathy: Nurturing animals with natural care by Dr Surjit Singh Makker, published in 2023, is a practical reference for practitioners and students interested in using homoeopathy for animal health. The book should be distinguished from another excellent and similarly titled volume, Practical Handbook of Veterinary Homeopathy: Healing Our Companion Animals from the Inside Out by Wendy Thacher Jensen, published in 2015. Dr Makker’s recent text represents an update and different work with its own clinical perspective and structure.
The author is a qualified veterinarian who has spent many years promoting and practising veterinary homoeopathy. This therapeutics handbook reflects the accumulation of forty years of clinical experience. That experience shapes the overall tone of the book. The scope of the book is considerable. It contains treatment guidance for more than 400 diseases affecting both pets and livestock including: Coccidosis (Poultry), Downers Cow Syndrome, Feline leukaemia, Fleas, Hip dysplasia, Injury, Mastitis (18 pages), Omphalitis, Parotitis, Psoriasis and Ulcers and so much more.
Dogs, cats, cattle, horses, poultry, and other domesticated animals are represented with an emphasis firmly on day-to-day clinical situations.
Each condition has a straightforward format. A brief description of the disorder appears first, with attention to causation and clinical presentation. This introductory section helps the reader confirm the general picture of the complaint before considering remedy selection. Homeopaths treating animals depend heavily on observation of behaviour, posture, appetite, and visible pathology when assessing animals, so this overview is useful.
Under the headings of each health complaint there are remedy suggestions including constitutional remedies, nosodes, sarcodes, mother tinctures and tissue salts along with potency suggestions according to the authors own experience. For example, under Abscesses of skin there are 24 suggested remedies. One of these is Gun powder, (slow healing abscesses and ulcers involving bone) suggested in 2x potency to be repeated every 6 hours. This kind of direct prescribing guidance appears throughout the book and reflects the author’s intention to provide a working manual rather than a theoretical text.
Another example occurs under the heading of ear infection. In a situation where balance is affected and a dog is walking or turning in circles due to the infection, the author says if the dog circles to the right, give Causticum 200c every 12 hours for three days followed by an interval of two days, However, if the dog circles to the left, give Rhus-tox. 200c every 12 hours. These brief prescribing notes illustrate the clinical orientation of the handbook. The reader receives concise directions linked to observable signs.
Students of homoeopathy will find the book indispensable as an overview of veterinary conditions and their homoeopathic management especially since animals cannot describe their symptoms verbally. The practitioner must rely on objective observation and interpretation of behavioural changes. This book links clinical signs with potential remedies and can help to give an understanding of the patterns in animal cases.
Dr Makker, is a veterinarian trained in India who later specialised in homoeopathy, he developed a career as a clinician, consultant, and independent researcher. His membership in the International Association of Veterinary Homeopathy reflects engagement with the broader international community of veterinary homeopaths.
At the heart of the book lies a sense of respect for animals and their care. This attitude appears in a brief cultural reflection included in the text. The author writes about the very old custom of playing melodious music to animals in India. It is a common saying that when the Ranjha of Punjab used to play flute to a herd of cattle, the cows enjoyed the tunes so much that they were calm and their milk was calming. This offers a glimpse into a tradition where animals are viewed with familiarity and care, and where harmony between humans and animals forms part of daily life. Within the context of a veterinary handbook, the image serves as a reminder that the treatment of animals involves both thorough knowledge of remedies and a deeper appreciation of their nature, needs, and wellbeing.
In summary, The Practical Handbook of Veterinary Homoeopathy offers a substantial reference work built upon the author’s long clinical experience. It presents treatment suggestions for more than four hundred animal diseases, describes their clinical features, and lists remedies with accompanying potency guidance. Examples such as the entries for skin abscesses and ear infections illustrate the concise prescribing style that runs throughout the book. Read as a practical handbook rather than a theoretical text, the volume provides a broad catalogue of veterinary homoeopathic knowledge that practitioners may draw upon in everyday clinical work.
